Green smoothies are one of my favorite ways to start the day because they are so simple to throw together and because they're an easy way to add vegetables into the breakfast routine.
We are definitely a smoothie-every-day kind of family, and Elle has been enjoying one since she first started eating solids. I love knowing that we're all starting the day off on the right foot, with tons of plants packed into each sip.
I tend to make the same smoothie over and over, since I can keep the same set of ingredients on hand, making grocery shopping easier and mornings more streamlined. Every once in a while, however, I like to change things up.
Come fall, I'm ready for warming spices, and the cozy tastes of pear and pumpkin. This Pear Spice Green Smoothie is the prefect blend of ripe pears, spicy fresh ginger, handfuls of verdant spinach, and creamy non-dairy milk.
It's banana-free (for all you banana-haters out there), and only slightly sweet. If you prefer something a little sweeter, feel free to add pitted dates or maple syrup. It also contains hemp seeds, a fantastic way to add plant-based protein to your morning.
Lately I've been blending a double batch of this smoothie on the weekend and then storing it in individual half-pint mason jars so that I can grab-and-go on weekday mornings. A great option if you're rushed in the morning or if you're single and aren't sure what to do with leftovers!

RECIPE & KID-FRIENDLY ADAPTATIONS
1 | This smoothie is as sweet as you'd like it to be, so feel free to add additional dates or maple syrup to make it more palatable to little ones.
2 | Skip or reduce the ginger to reduce the spice level.
3 | Hemp seeds (sometimes called hemp hearts) are packed with fiber and a great way to add plant-based protein and omegas to any recipe. Look for them in the nut and seed section of your grocery store, or order them online. You can also omit them if you prefer.
4 | If you can't find ripe pears, substitute 1 cored, chopped apple.

Pear Spice Green Smoothie
1 ripe pear, skin on, cored and chopped
1 teaspoon fresh ginger, peeled and grated or chopped
2 cups packed baby spinach
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (from about 1 lemon)
2 tablespoons hemp hearts*
2 cups unsweetened non-dairy milk (such as Super-Fast Vanilla Cashew Milk, almond milk, or rice milk)
1-4 pitted soft Medjool dates or 2 teaspoons pure maple syrup (optional)
1 cup ice
1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender. Blend on high until very smooth. Taste and add additional dates or maple syrup if you prefer a sweeter smoothie.
*Notes: Look for hemp seeds in the nut and seed section of your grocery store, or order them online.
Makes 2-3 servings.
